Liposuction

Liposuction reshapes your body by removing unwanted excess fat deposits through suctioning. Liposuction will improve your figure and the fit of your clothes, aiding your whole appearance. Liposuction can be used to suck fat deposits from common trouble spots including the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, bottom, “love handles” and neck.

How does liposuction work?

In the adult body, there is a fixed number of fat cells. By sucking them away, liposuction can permanently remove these fat deposits. Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, local with intravenous medication or general anesthesia. Liposuction can normally be performed on an out-patient basis. The incision, or incisions if treating multiple areas, are only a few millimetres in length. Prior to the surgery, the doctor will inject the treatment area with a large volume of fluid to facilitate fat removal, reduce bruising and bleeding and anaesthetize the area. The surgeon will use a stainless steel tube, called a cannula, to remove fat deposits and rejuvenate your body. The length of the procedure will depend on the treatment area, or areas, and the type of cannula chosen. The procedure can be combined with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to further enhance the figure and remove any excess skin that remains after suctioning. Liposuction may also be complemented by Smartlipo, a laser technology that delivers energy directly to fat cells, causing them to rupture and drain away as liquid. It can reduce any unsightly pockets of skin left behind by liposuction. Its heating action also causes the skin to tighten and shrink more than regular liposuction.

How will I heal from my liposuction?

Swelling should disappear within six to eight weeks. When performed by a skilled surgeon, excellent long-term results can be achieved. Complications from liposuction are rare. Liposuction has been widely and safely performed in Canada for many years.
